Grace, Peace, adn thanks to you for coming to read once again. I hope the following post is both educational and entertaining. If it is not, I blame only myself and invite you to blame me as well.
My mom recently said something that really struck me. I don’t remember the exact phrase, but it was along these lines, “I never realized that figures were such a big deal in this generation. It seems to be the new model railroading.” You know what, she’s right. I think that might be one of the best assessments of the hobby I have ever heard, and I think that’s great. It really is, because railroading has become a kind of American tradition and a validated and respected hobby.
Hears the thing, though. Collecting action figures is usually viewed as a lesser hobby. It is viewed as a childish waste, and it’s disheartening to me. The fact of the matter is, collecting figures is as legitimate a hobby as collecting trains, collecting sports or music memorabilia, or whatever else. The big argument and condescension comes from those who say, “Yeah, but all those other hobbies are from REAL bases–sports, train layouts, music. These are all REAL and ACTUAL things, not fantasy or make-believe. That’s where the legitimacy comes from.” Okay, you know what, whatever. Human history is a story; and franklly, fantasy and fiction are usually means of exploring and engaging real themes and concepts through another lense or filter. Fantasy and Fiction storytelling often help us understand things more than actal historic events do, becuase fantasy stories are able to make the historic and truths concise and more easily visible and relatable. Anyway, this is my site, I’m not here to defend myself, but I just wanted to get that off my chest.
Now that you know I feel the collecting Hobby is a valid one, here are some of my personal reasons for collecting. Another’s reasons may be different and some may think these are invalid reasons for a hobby. I’m not saying they should be any one else’s reasons, I am just saying they are mine:
(1) Memories/Reminders of beloved events and characters. In the same way sports memorabilia reminds fans of their favorite teams, plays, and atheletes, figures serve as a friendly and enjoyable reminder of the property on which they are based. Sports fans love when their teams have a great year or when their favorite players make historic plays. Figures serve the same purpose–only instead of sports teams it’s superero teams and crews of sci-fi startships and instead of plays its scenes or moments from beloved stories. Sometimes, these reminders can stir emotion or just remind an owner of why they love a character, movie, or moment so much. It’s nice.
(2) Figures are playable and fun. Like trains, Action figures are collectibles you can mess around with and enjoy on a hands-on level. How fun is it to transform Transformers? Or pose Star Wars Figures? Or play with legos? I know people find it silly; but it’s a fun and enjoyable pasttime– a pasttime which is creative and harmless. Also, for me as a screenwriter, it’s been (a) a great writing tool when developing scenes or action sequences (b) a great escape into the worlds in which I am writing, oftentimes offering a very tangible way for me to engage concepts and ideas in my mind. I know it sounds ridiculoous, but when I play with figures, I tend to create a new world or a new extension of an existing one wherein I make the rules and watch as my own story unfolds, sometimes subconsciously. It’s an excellent tool for writing and fun way of passing time. Yes, I do sound effects, and yes, I do different voices.
(3) Action figures are relatively cheap. Most action figures can cost you $8 a pop or $15 if you’re into the specialty market–some very high-end statue-like “figures” can run as high as $300, but that’s a very small niche market in the overall figure hobby. Overall, the hobby is relatively cheap, especailly when compared to other hobbies which can cost much more money. A video game can cost $40, a price at which you can get about 3 or four figures (depending on the price, of course). Tickets to sporting events, new locomotives are both more expensive as well. Like all things, this cost can add up; but under a reasonable budget, this hobby can be maintained and enjoyed for a relatively low cost considering how expensive hobbies like trains, sport-going, and video games can become (not that there is anything wrong with theses hobbies at all. If they are your hobby, more power to you!).
(4) Action Figures CAN be an interesting Hobby. I have made a very, very deliberate effort to have figures from a variety of sources on display in my corner of power (see articles on that, here, here, here, here, and here). I have tried to display figures from movies, television, and comics from a variety of genres in a variety of scales. My goal, to have a little something for everyone. I have a whole shelf dedicated for sci-fi, several displays from Action flics, figures from comics, and even characters from Disney. I do this because I would like to be able to use the wall/corner as an opener for discussion. Most people can find something on it they recognize or enjoy and its cool to have them comment, giving us an automatic point of common interest.
(5) Figures can create decor. Now, becuase I’m married, my ability to do this is limited; but figures as a motif in a room can be a very eye-catching and interesting means of decorating. I love going to homes wherein the moving-viewing area also has toys and memorabilia on display. It’s cool and really pulls a visitor into the space, making them excited about what they’re about to experience–in the same way a train layout or collection of sports memorabilia can do in a room as well.
Bottom line, I am not trying to downplay anyone else’s hobby. In fact, I encourage others who have hobbies different than my own. the only hobby I don’t encourage is giving people crap for their interests. So if that’s your hobby, we’re not friends. Everyone has the right to choose his or her own hobby based on his or her own interests and as long as it is not designed and inherently, directly damgaing to another person or the environment0, I support said hobby and fully encourage it. Sports, music, movies, toys, trains, posters, comics, clothes, scrap-booking, whatever your hobby is, I wish you the most possible satisfaction and pleasure from it. Figures is mine, and it is suiting me well!!!
